The Well-Tempered Clavier (Das Wohltemperierte Klavier), BWV 846–893, is a collection of solo keyboard compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. The title was first given to a set of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys, composed in 1722 "for the benefit and use of musical youth eager to learn, and for the enjoyment of those already skilled in this art." Bach later assembled a second set in 1742, simply titled "Twenty-four Preludes and Fugues." Today, these two collections are commonly considered as a single work, known as the Well-Tempered Clavier, with the sets referred to as Books I and II.
